radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) is the highest of any berry
ever tested. This property means that Acai has the potential
to inhibit lipid oxidation and thereby reduce the risk of cholesterol
being oxidized.
Although
this assumption is based on in vitro research ( done in the
lab, not in the body), by the end of 2007, we have already reported
to an international symposium on the health effects of fruits
and vegetables, that in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled,
cross-over study of healthy adults 10 to 52, a beverage containing
as its predominant ingredient Acai, did significantly inhibit
the oxidation of lipids, based on the gold standard thiobarbituric
acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay. We also found that this
beverage was able to significantly increase antioxidant activity
in serum during oxidative stress based on the reactive oxygen
stress in red blood cells (ROS RBC) assay, which measures the
ability of antioxidants in Acai to enter into living cells and
protect them from damage."
